How a Game Is Won

The clock is the whole story. How much of it there is depends on where you are watching.

NBA

Four Quarters

Twelve minutes a quarter in the NBA. Forty-eight minutes of clock, and rarely a lead safe enough to sit on.

4quarters 12min each
FIBA

The International Game

FIBA and EuroLeague play ten-minute quarters. Shorter games, tighter margins and a different shot clock rhythm.

4quarters 10min each
Overtime

Extra Periods

Level at the buzzer and it goes to overtime — five more minutes, repeated until somebody finally leads.

Series & Knockout

The NBA settles it over seven games. College and FIBA do it in one — win or your season is over.

Markets

More Than the Winner

High scores mean wide margins, and wide margins mean the spread does the real work.

Moneyline

The straight call — which team wins, whatever the final margin turns out to be.

Point Spread

Basketball's handicap, and its most traded market. The favourite has to cover, not just win.

Total Points

Read the pace and the defence, then take the combined score over or under the line.

Quarters & Halves

Settle on a single period instead of the whole game — useful when a team starts slow.

Player Points

An individual's scoring total, where minutes and matchup often outweigh season averages.

Rebounds & Assists

The other two thirds of a stat line, taken alone or combined into a single number.

Three-Pointers Made

How often it falls from deep — the market that follows the modern game's centre of gravity.

First Basket

Who opens the scoring. Decided inside the first possession, and over before you settle in.

Questions

Basketball, Answered

It depends on the competition. NBA games run four quarters of twelve minutes, while FIBA and EuroLeague use four quarters of ten. NCAA men's games are played as two twenty-minute halves. If the scores are level at the end, five-minute overtime periods are played until one side leads.
The NBA and WNBA, EuroLeague and Liga ACB in Europe, NCAA college basketball including March Madness, the FIBA Basketball World Cup, plus the NBL in Australia and the CBA in China. The full list is in the leagues section.
The spread is basketball's handicap. The favourite is given a points deduction and the underdog a matching credit, so the market settles on the adjusted score rather than the raw result. It is the most traded basketball market because scores run high and margins vary widely.
Props settle on an individual's stat line rather than the team result — points scored, rebounds, assists, three-pointers made, or combinations of those. Matchups, minutes and pace often matter more than a player's season average. They are laid out in Markets.
Yes. Games marked Live show the running score and the current quarter, and the board updates as the game moves on.
Basketball moves fast and games come nightly, which makes it easy to lose track. Set a limit before you start, take breaks between games, and treat any stake as the cost of entertainment rather than an investment. FANCODE.BET is for players aged 18 and over.
